| Abstract: | Our behaviour, concentration, mood, emotions, and other traits have all been shown to be greatly influenced by music (Juslin & Västfjäll, 2008). The overarching purpose of this dissertation is to conduct qualitative research into the perceived relationship that exists between music and productivity in the workplace. The study's two secondary objectives are to gain an understanding of the influence that music has on an individual's mood and to explore the impact that different types of music have on an individual's level of productivity. Nine participants (3 males and 6 females) were recruited through convenience sampling to provide data. I used a qualitative approach and interviewed people in a semi-structured manner. Using Thematic Analysis (TA) (Braun & Clarke, 2006), I was able to separate out three overarching themes from the collected data: namely, "Is Music Essential in the Workplace?", "Evoking Emotions" and "Mood and Work Performance." The results indicate that music can function as a companion for persons during the workday, based on the insights gained from the participants' perspectives and experiences. The atmosphere at work can be greatly influenced by the music chosen. In addition, employees may become distracted by excessive noise levels, such as loud music, which might impair their ability to focus on their work. This study's findings suggest that businesses should give serious thought to the value of providing background music in the workplace. Boosting morale and job satisfaction in the workplace is possible through the strategic placement of positive design elements in the workplace. |
