Abstract: This dissertation explores perceptions of distance and closeness in sibling relationships among younger and older adults. Drawing on previous research, the dissertation examines the significance of sibling relationships, particularly how they differ from other family relationships, and factors like age, communication patters and family dynamics may affect sibling ties. The study is guided by the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology, which aims to gain an in-depth understanding of participants' experiences of sibling relationships. Findings revealed that similarities and differences are fundamental to siblings’ perception of distance and closeness, with age gaps and shared history also being influential. Overall, the study highlights the need to examine sibling relationships across the lifespan and to consider internal and external factors that may influence the experience of closeness and distance in these relationships.
