Abstract: | This research study explores young males’ perceptions of their body image in relation to the influence of social media, including the various benefits and challenges they face, as well as how they cope with these difficulties. It is also designed to investigate how society can address these consequences. Sixteen participants were recruited through the registrar for this qualitative study and were divided equally into two semi-structured focus groups consisting of open-ended questions. Thus, the data was transcribed and analysed using Thematic Analysis. In addition, the themes which emerged were understanding body image, the power of social media, problematic caused by social media, coping mechanisms and methods of moving forward. The main findings from this present study suggests that males are indeed impacted by social media both positively and negatively, however, this is overlooked both locally and internationally. For this reason, these individuals should learn about the repercussions that can arise from unrealistic standards, as well as being granted access to more support in this regard. |
