Abstract: This article introduces the Maltese folk singing known as għana, which has a long history in the country as well as other places where Maltese emigrated to. It describes the types and sub-types of għana: l-għanja tal-banju, l-għana spirtu pront, l-għana tal-fatt, and la Bormliża, as well as the main elements and principles of għana, mainly, improvisation, rhyming, quatrains, and chaining/response.
