Abstract: | The church of ‘Our Lady of Victory’ was one of the first buildings that the knights constructed in Valletta, the new city of the Order. Grandmaster Jean Parisot de Valette (1557–68) decreed that a church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin was to be constructed to commemorate the Great Siege victory over the Ottomans. It was widely believed that it was due to the divine intercession of the Blessed Virgin that the siege had ended. The appellative ‘Our Lady of Victory’ transpired into the feast day that was celebrated annually on the 8th September to commemorate the island’s victory over the Turks. |
