Abstract: The first Carmelites who settled in Malta, a tiny island nation in the heart of the Meditermean Sea, about 90 km south of Sicily, arrived from Sicily 600 years ago, in 1418, after they inherited an area of land known as Il-Lunzjata (The Annunciation), limits of Rabat. Being cut off from the hustle and bustle of the city, as conducive to contemplation as Il-Lunzjata might have been, it was also unsafe and prone to pirate attacks from the southern mostly uninhabited part of the Island.
