Abstract: The construction of pillboxes in Malta gained momentum in 1938 as a crucial component of a comprehensive defence strategy, aimed to thwart the potential invasion by Italian forces. Initially, these pillboxes were erected in the susceptible northern region of the island of Malta, but as time progressed, they were dispersed in the most vulnerable areas of the island and located at critical and other strategically important positions to function as defensive strongholds. By the conclusion of the war, it is estimated that approximately 200 pillboxes had been erected.
