Abstract: microRNAs are small RNA molecules found in a wide array of organisms that function as post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression. They are known to be implicated in a wide array of conditions among which several types of cancer. Since our knowledge and appreciation of the importance of microRNAs is increasing rapidly, the need for novel computational approaches has become evident. In this manuscript are discussed advances in the study of microRNA expression and regulation, microRNA targeting and microRNA function. The need for the study of each of these fields will be discussed as well as algorithms, web servers and other tools developed to help further our understanding on the connection of microRNAs and cancer.
