Abstract: | This dissertation focuses on exploring the relationship between recreational marijuana use and its effects on mental health. Decriminalisation of recreational marijuana is becoming more widespread with time and is currently an extremely controversial topic of discussion. Scholars argue both in favour and against the consumption and consequences of such drug. This dissertation refers to relevant literature to identify and understand what are the expected risks when an individual makes use of marijuana. The literature review includes reference to studies, academic papers, books, grey literature and other academic writings that focus on the impact of marijuana use on mental health. This study utilised a systematic methodology, which aims to investigate if mental conditions such as depression, psychosis and addiction are associated with the consumption of recreational cannabis. The findings suggests that there is a strong association between marijuana use and an increased risk of mental health problems, particularly among individuals who are adolescents. Yet more studies are required to explore the subject since it is suggested that the relationship between marijuana use and mental health is a complex issue and may also be influenced by various factors. These include the amount of consumption, the duration of use, gender, age and genetics. |
