Abstract: The notion of visual literacy is still not agreed upon many theories and theorists have conflicting opinions. This qualitative research looks at the study of two separate focus groups in order to measure whether formal aesthetic training is an important element in the recovery of ideological signifiers through visual manipulation in the reading of cinematic texts. The experiment brought about different features whereby students with formal training in visual aesthetics recognised the connotative and denotative of the codes of film grammar. Whereas the other students could only appreciated codes derived from everyday perceptions.
