Abstract: In May 1940 the British Mediterranean Fleet transferred its headquarters from Malta to Alexandria because it was considered to be too dangerous to station surface warships at Malta due to the island's proximity to Italian air-bases in Sicily. This precaution proved to be justified because a number of secondary warships which visited Malta were sunk in Maltese waters - the toll included 7 destroyers. Here follows the story of their loss
