Abstract: This qualitative research explores the effects of various family structures and experiences on juvenile delinquency by exploring it from the professionals’ and prisoners’ points of view. It presents a detailed overview of how the family can impact the life of adolescents and how this could eventually lead to delinquency. This study adopts a thematic analysis approach through a series of questions chosen for semi-structured interviews with participants. Results have shown how several experiences that take place in the family, including the environment, parenting and support, and traumatic experiences, can in fact influence the upbringing of adolescents and put them at higher risk of delinquency. The use of substances can further escalate a delinquent act. Prevention strategies were also suggested by participants by reflecting on what could have helped them earlier on in their lives with regards to their first delinquent act.
