Abstract: The Hal Saflieni hypogeum which dates to the period 3300 to 3000 BC is a labyrinthine underground complex which has been steadily deteriorating since its discovery. From 1986 to 1993 a thorough chemical, biological, environmental, geological and hydrogeological study was carried out which showed that deterioration is primarily due to the infiltration of ground water, aggravated by the presence of visitors. The site is now temporarily closed to implement a variety of measures for the better presentation and conservation of the site, including tackling the problems of water infiltration and algal growth and the installation of a partial climate control system. These measures will be accompanied by a drastic reduction in visitor numbers when the site is opened once again to the public.
