Abstract: This study explores the relationship between extracurricular sports participation and academic outcomes of post-secondary students in Malta. Given the dearth of comprehensive data in the Maltese context, the study is based on original data collection to achieve its objectives. Collected through the administration of a survey among current tertiary students, the econometric analysis shows a positive relationship between participation in extracurricular sports and the academic performance of post-secondary students in Malta. Regression estimates suggest that sports participation is linked to an increase of approximately seven marks in the final grade, indicating a tangible and beneficial impact on academic performance, even when controlling for various demographic, educational, and parental factors. The analysis also considers different levels of participation, unveiling a significant and positive association between sports participation and academic achievements. This study urges policymakers to prioritise sports participation and academic support for post-secondary students in Malta, given the proven link between extracurricular sports and improved academic performance.
