Abstract: In a Creative Writing session the tutor sets the following exercise: Imagine a room, probably of average dimensions. Walls, windows, flooring are for you to picture and it can be as well-lit or as dark as you choose, but the important point is that the room is empty, except for one chair. The chair can be of any design and in any condition. It can be upturned, or flung to a corner of the room, or stood right in the centre. Otherwise there is nothing and nobody in the room. No one at all. Just an empty room, with a chair. Now write a story about the room. [excerpt]
