Abstract: Documents are central features of civilisation. They help us organise, remember, and make sense of our lives and world. We create them to help remember the past. We deploy them to establish order and control over society. We communicate with others with and through them. We use them to represent us in diverse ways and contexts. Our lives and world are immersed in, and even reliant upon, documents. Yet we are often inured to their existence, let alone significance. [excerpt]
