A number of studies have associated the adult-onset disease state of Metabolic Syndrome with either a low or a high birth weight. This has been correlated to alterations in the intrauterine milieu causing changes in pancreatic and hypothalamic development. This study was designed to test for a possible link between the nutritional deprivation which occurred during the Second World War in Malta to an increased risk of gestational carbohydrate metabolism abnormalities. The study confirmed that women who were born during the war were statistically more likely to have infants with a higher mean birth weight than their counterparts born before and after the war.en_GB
