Abstract: | States depend on symbols and imagery to shape public opinion and create narratives to bolster their legitimacy. State ceremonies, public monuments and official buildings are replete with meaning and symbolism. So are official documents issued by the state, such as maps, stamps, coinage and banknotes (Brunn, 2000). This study contends that banknotes (together with coins) have a semantic and a semiotic value besides having an economic value. It takes as a case study Malta and its various currency issues following independence; in 1967, 1973, 1979, 1986, and 1989 until the adoption of the euro in 2008. [excerpt] |
