The Partit Laburista performed badly in three consecutive elections in 1998, 2003 and 2008. This seemingly illustrated that the socialist party model in place was passe and irrelevant. However, in 2013 the party achieved the highest electoral result since independence, and this performance was repeated in 2017. A study of this radical transformation is warranted. This paper attempts to do this by utilising the key theories applied to party system change. More specifically, the paper applies Kirchheimer's catch-all party model, which has been used extensively to illustrate changes in party modalities in European party systems after world war two.
