Abstract: This dissertation aims to understand how space and time are perceived within Virtual Reality (VR), and how they can affect the interpretation and the sensation caused by the artwork. The last few years have seen important growth in VR applications, yet limited literature is available on the adequate disposition of digital exhibition spaces. In this dissertation, I offer a comprehensive explanation of the importance of empty space (the space surrounding an artwork), based on the standing theories of visual perception and design. Throughout history, we have witnessed an evolution of the use of empty space in the Arts. With the recent growth of digital, it is pertinent to ask ourselves how this element of “nothingness” can be used to further enhance the perception of Art. The perception of time is explored through the repetition of elements and the use of kinetic sculptures (3D animated models), as well as the use of lights and shadows combined with the movement of the viewer within the virtual space. I hope my work provides some insight into the impact of empty space when displaying an art piece, particularly in immersive environments.
