Ornate and elaborate design : Għarb

Abstract

This research project highlights and portrays some of the most intricate ornate designs found within the locality of Għarb. The main purpose of this research project was to explore further these design motifs and features which decorate my hometown. Apart from exploring, I also felt the need to document, make these designs known and preserve them for future generations. This was achieved by using a combination of contemporary methods and techniques. With photography being my main method of gathering data, I started to collect and document as many design motifs as I could possibly spot. Getting to know about these vast designs of Għarb was not something which could have been done easily in a few weeks. Several walks around the village and informal communication with the community of Għarb has helped me to identify and collect as many designs as I possibly could. After observing and photographing the findings, I analysed and started to illustrate, by digital means, some of the chosen design motifs. Producing vector illustrations of these designs and ornamental motifs gave another dimension to the documentation and to my project overall. The documented visuals along with other information that was dug out were then presented in a single printed publication, utilising theories and principles of graphical and editorial design.
