January 2002 witnessed the death of Pierre Bourdieu whose sociology has been labelled, perhaps with only a little exaggeration, as not only the best, but…the only game in town. Over the past decade Pierre Bourdieu has increasingly been portrayed by the French media as the new intellectual star, taking the mantle from Michel Foucault and having the edge over his contemporary Jacques Derrida. Bourdieu’s recent denouncements of neoliberal doctrine propelled him to a Sartrean intellectual in the full sense of the term.en_GB
