Abstract: This dissertation examines women’s employment and career experiences within Malta's Five Star hotels, expanding on the research conducted by Karina Debono in 2013. Karina Debono's research primarily examines gender stereotypes and their impact on career advancement in managerial positions within Malta’s Five-Star hotels. The current study distinguishes between franchised and independently owned hotels and explores the broader spectrum of challenges faced by women in their career growth within the hotel industry. It explores the hurdles encountered and highlights human resource policies and adaptability measures. The primary focus of this investigation is centred on the advancement of women within junior and senior roles, exploring the current landscape of opportunities for professional development. The role of robust support networks emerges as a crucial factor, especially while navigating the delicate balance between familial responsibilities and professional aspirations. In adopting a qualitative approach, this research delves into the complex challenges that women encounter when balancing parenthood and career development. In addition to traditional gender biases, the study explores issues related to networking, negotiating norms, and micromanagement dynamics. The function of management emerges as pivotal, revealing differences between franchised and independently owned hotels. Franchised hotels demonstrate structured career trajectories and training initiatives, fostering a sense of self-assurance among women. Conversely, independently owned hotels, create nurturing work environments even amid resource constraints. Sixteen women actively participated in comprehensive interviews, providing first-hand insights into their experiences of work within the human resource, finance, and sales fields. Throughout the dissertation, the proactive commitment of the hotel industry towards achieving gender parity takes centre stage though there are still areas for improving gender equality. Noteworthy initiatives such as networking events exclusively for women, adopting unconventional advertising methods, and implementing flexible work schedules underscore a dedicated approach to promoting diversity. Partnerships with educational institutions and initiatives related to employee well-being reflect a holistic strategy towards empowerment and inclusivity. The hotel industry, through its commitment to growth and inclusivity, establishes a platform for ongoing advancements and beneficial changes.
