Abstract: This chapter discusses the evolving role of the Catholic Church in Malta's media system which mirrors, among other things, the place of the Church in society and its relationship to the political system. The chapter adopts a historical approach starting with the introduction of printing at the time of the Knights and freedom of the press during the period of British rule. These innovations were met by initial opposition before being adopted by the ecclesial institution. The chapter then discusses the development of the role of the Church in the evolving broadcasting scenario which was influenced both by political and theological considerations. In the final part of the chapter, the presence of the Church in cyberspace as well as strengths and challenges are discussed.
