Abstract: The name Sliema which in all likelihood is derived from the semitic salute salam appeared for the first time in official documents towards the middle of the 18th century. It is widely thought that the aforementioned chapel attracted the seafarers' devotion who had the pious habit of invoking the Blessed Virgin at the start of their voyage.
