Abstract: | Local economic, political and cultural aspects: Over the past few years, the Maltese economy had been growing at unprecedented levels. Rebounding after a period of sluggish growth, which was further dampened by the 2008 global crisis and a restructuring process, the Maltese economy was characterised by fast gross domestic product (GDP) and employment growth, propelled by a strong services sector. Economic forecasts released before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic suggested that Malta would continue to register strong albeit moderating economic activity. The European Commission has now revised its forecasts for the country, projecting GDP to fall by 5.8% by the end of 2020, which is however expected to be short lived with a return to GDP growth of around 6% in 2021.
