A study of resources utilised by the national water utility for maintenance and control purposes : the case of the Desalination Section

Abstract

Maintenance is required to keep an organization's productive assets in good running order for the duration of the asset's life and beyond. Maintenance requires resources, mostly in the form of human, material, money, outsourcing and information. The information helps to monitor all resources so that control and adjustments can be made to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of maintenance. This long essay sets out to study the state of the most important resources used for maintenance in the Desalination Services Unit of the Water Services Corporation. These are the human and material resources. The control of these resources is also studied as this is important for the optimum running of maintenance. A quantitative approach was used to analyse the situation of these resources. The data was collected using a five point Likert scale questionnaire, analysed and the results interpreted. The result found showed that it could not be proven that there are enough human resources of the right quality in the maintenance departments. The material resources are adequate and issued in good time. The control on the human resources is having a positive effect on their quality but a negative effect on the control of the material resources.
