Abstract: Sanctuary law, that is, seeking asylum or refuge in a Church or a holy place was an imperative and fragile matter associated with the Police during colonial rule in Malta. Sanctuary was also governed by a motu proprio - a document issued by a Pope. This process was very complex to deal with and was finally annulled on April 10, 1828 by Governor Frederick Ponsonby.
