Abstract: | The decision of Mattia Preti (1613 -1699), to move to Malta in 1661 where he settled down for good, proved a momentuous one for the development of art in this country - even' more far-reaching in its total effect on the art of the Maltese, than Caravaggio's 15 month stay earlier in the same century. Due to the odd priorities of past Maltese historiography, we have been induced to forget that Preti kept a very busy bottega, apart from a fairly wider circle of imitators. |
