Abstract: | The European Court has often reiterated the principle that "the advancement of the equality of the sexes is to-day a major goal in the Member States of the Council of Europe; this means that very weighty reasons would have to be put forward before a difference of treatment on the sole ground of sex could be regarded as compatible with the Convention". (Burghartz v. Switzerland, 22 February 1994 18 EHRR 101; Schuler-Zoraggen v. Switzerland 24 June 1993, 16 EHRR 405, Abdulaziz, Cabales and Balkandali v. United Kingdom 28 May 1985 7 EHRR 471). |
