dc.description.abstractVariable-length codes can be used to perform source coding (data compression) by encoding the more probable source symbols using short codewords so as to give a smaller average codeword length than if the source was to be encoded with a fixed length code. If the variable-length code is given additional structure it may also perform error correction and may be used as a combined source-channel code. A new, near optimum sequential decoding algorithm for variable-length error-correcting codes is presented.en_GB
