Freedom from want, alongside with freedom from fear and the freedom for future generations to sustain their lives on earth are the three principal areas identified as needing particular attention from the world community at large in the Millennium Assembly. In his Millennium report, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Kofi Annan clearly underlined under Agenda item 49(b) the fact that while the eradication of poverty will become the most pressing challenge in the years to come, its elimination is the responsibility of everyone and not only of the leaders of those States which have a high proportion of poor within their populations.en_GB
