Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the significance of non-tariff barriers (NTBs) on regional economic integration, shedding light on their role as critical determinants shaping the success or failure of collaborative economic endeavors. Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) are considered to be the main roadblocks to trade in Africa, limiting trade among member states. These usually subtle trade barriers come in many shape and form with the aim of disrupting the flow of goods and services as individual countries try to protect their domestic economic interests. The purpose of this research is to highlight the extent to which these NTBs affect the regional integration efforts in SADC. The research employs a qualitative analysis of data collected through a survey of 8 international trade experts with expert knowledge on Southern Africa. The objective was to obtain expert opinion on among others, most frequently used NTBs, reasons behind their implementation, impediments to their removal and proposals for their elimination. The study contends that NTBs counter the regions efforts to intra- trade and that administrative, regulatory, and protectionist barriers, along with issues like customs delays, economic diversity, infrastructure gaps, and corruption, are among the most significant NTBs hindering economic integration in the region. The findings aim to inform policy makers, businesses and other researchers on the importance of addressing NTBs to foster more robust and sustainable regional collaborations.
