Abstract: In the St. Luke`s Day Oration organised by the British Medical Association (Malta Branch) on the 18th October 1960, Prof. V.G. Griffiths underlines the worth of History of Medicine within the medical curriculum. The cultural and utilitarian importance of medical history is furthermore illustrated by some examples from the various sectors of medicine that indicate how the achievements of modern medicine can be traced back to their origin and how basic medical principles progressed over time.
