One of the main ethical problems in biomedical issues has been deciding who should have access to our genetic information and why. In this contribution we discuss the Maltese Data Protection Act and how it affects the transfer of personal information, including medical information, with particular regard to genetic databases. This is part of a larger European FP5 project (PRIVIREAL) studying protection and privacy in genetics. Recently, legislation in Malta has been amended in order to allow a genetic company to carry out genetic tests. This company has been in contact with local doctors to encourage them to refer patients for paternity testing and other genetic tests. [excerpt]en_GB
