Abstract: Ray Campbell’s book is an engaging read, and a fascinating study of the British alternative cabaret (altcab) movement, informed by his own lived experience as a performer. The book is structured over six chapters: the Introduction, which outlines the parameters and focus of the study and its approach; Chapter 2: ‘A Journey through Time’, which offers a Bourdieusian view of the history and socio-cultural context; Chapter 3: ‘The Outsider’, which takes an autoethnographic approach, including memory and reflection; Chapter 4: ‘An Ethnography of Alternative Cabaret’, foregrounding altcab performers’ perspectives; Chapter 5: ‘CAST, New Variety, and the Hackney Empire’ as a case study; and Chapter 6, which offers concluding reflections.
