The new building for the National Archives of Malta : a conceptual approach towards a contemporary role

Abstract

This thesis examines contemporary national archives from a technical perspective, focusing on the community aspect, particularly research. Despite its limitations, the current National Archives of Malta has come a long way with the existing buildings scattered across the islands. A new building will complement and strengthen the core values of this archive, particularly in preserving records in paper format, electronic, and audio-visual media. Accessibility is also essential to reach the local community and the world. The author used the desktop method as a methodology approach to conduct this study and included two case studies: the National Archives of Kew and the National Archives of France. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants, which helped identify the current challenges each unit and user faces while confirming the need for a new building. The analysis of this study demonstrates the areas that need improvement to enhance records management and better service areas in the reading room. Overall, the features required can only be fulfilled by a new building. Unfortunately, despite the electoral promise in 2019, the project has been put on hold without any specific reasons.
