Abstract: Advertisements in Maltese English-language newspapers, in the 1950s to the 1980s are reflective of a time of change from Malta as a British colony to an independent nation-state. People’s lives and lifestyles changed over these three decades, as evident from fashion, technology, and the development of new tastes in food, as well as new tourist products and service. The dissertation delves into the development of these trends and explores the range of items which local consumers could acquire between 1950-1980. The advertised products were not only imported but also produced or supplied by emerging local enterprises, factories, and business. It also investigates how shifts in advertising and local consumption reflected the bigger changes which the Maltese economy and society experienced during this point of transition. [...]
