Abstract: | This dissertation sociologically investigates how individuals with diverse romantic backgrounds experience romantic relationships. It holistically aims to understand the influence of social, cultural, and personal factors on intimate connections. This research made use of a qualitative research design and conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with eight Maltese heterosexual adults. These interviews were carried out to collect rich and detailed experiences and perspectives on romantic relationships. The findings of the study reveal that definitions of romantic relationships vary significantly depending on the individuals’ own experience. Important themes were identified, such as the role of self-confidence, communication, the impact of socio-economic status on relationships, as well as the evolving perceptions of love, attraction, and commitment in contemporary society. Moreover, this study focused on linking personal experiences with broader social constraints. It offers a foundation for future studies which delve into romantic relationship dynamics and their effects on both policy and practice in the family. The insights which have been gained in this study highlight the importance of a two-sided sociological approach, which was used to examine the interplay of structure and agency in the construction and interpretation of personal relationships. |
