Abstract: Robert Cavendish Spencer was born in 1791, the third son of George John, the second Earl Spencer. At the age of thirteen, he enlisted in the Royal Navy and was stationed on the battleship 'Tiger'. Spencer served, not only along the British coast, but also in the Americas. Finally, he joined a squadron operating in the Mediterranean, and it was here that he saw Malta for the first time.
