As in most countries, teenage life in Malta is regulated by a variety of factors, among which one can mention the age factor, the seasonal factor, and the socialization factor. Early teen life (13 to 16) is characterized mainly by the parameters of the education system. Education in Malta is compulsory up to the age of 16 unless a special exemption is granted by the Education Division. During the scholastic year, which runs between September and June, teenagers in Malta start their day by preparing to go to school. School transportation, starting as early as seven in the morning, is available to most schools, and although distances are very short on the island, most students make use of this service, which is provided for free in state schools.
