Abstract: This chapter traces the background to William Morris’s notions of creativity, as they developed in his writing, artistic expression and political activism in nineteenth-century Britain. It then presents these concepts in the light of later studies of creativity. Morris’s focus on the social and political context that enables creative production foreshadows the sociocultural approach to the study of creativity that matured in the mid-twentieth century.
