The benefits of sport and physical activity on the body and mind, and their contribution towards the prevention and treatment of various diseases have been widely recognised (Steinacker et al., 2023). Furthermore, the economic benefits created, both in terms of health cost savings and productivity at work are important, particularly for small states who have limited natural resources (Hafner et al., 2019). Despite these benefits, a large percentage of the European population, including many small states, is not as regularly active as recommended by the World Health Organisation (World Health Organisation, 2022). Therefore, creating a sporting and active culture has become an important priority, particularly for small states, who are recognising the benefits and the power of sport for the holistic well-being of societies and for its economic input. Higher rates of participation will result in savings, which could be invested into the promotion and development of sport at all levels. [excerpt from the Introduction]en_GB
