Title: The perception and understanding of design and technology amongst secondary level students

Abstract: The objectives of this research were to explore how pupils perceive and understand the subject of Design and Technology during their initial experience as secondary level students. Focus group sessions were conducted with the same participants in Form 1 and Form 2 respectively, with the aim of identifying what factors influence pupils to opt or discontinue studying Design and Technology. From the qualitative data obtained within the discussions in Form 1, it was observed that, primarily pupils portrayed the subject as a viable option since they were attracted to its sole characteristics of involving practical activities and being comprised of four learning areas. Additionally, hands-on skills gained through this subject were also considered as providing better chances of employment and leading individuals towards their desired professions. Family members together with information provided by schools were also regarded as having a strong influence upon individuals. In the second round of the discussions, due to the inherent aspects of Design and Technology pupils no longer perceived it as leading to their future ambitions and most of them were not planning on continuing to study it. Although the subject was no longer being perceived as ideal for their future ambitions, it still received praised for its unique characteristics as being relevant for life. Consequently, the current reform of having Design and Technology as a compulsory subject was perceived as helpful in providing a better understanding of what the subject entails.
