Abstract: • This is a guide for SME agrifood producers and exporters interested in targeting European union markets. • The European union is increasingly promoting more rigorous sustainability policies relating to agriculture and food products in the market – especially with respect to carbon and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). • The inclusion of carbon footprint labels on food products is becoming increasingly popular and demanded in the European market – resulting in a potential source of competitive advantage. • EU policy currently does not yet impose such labels – however regulatory policy is actively targeting sustainable food labeling, and EU strategy is committed to achieving 2030 and 2050 carbon emissions and carbon neutrality targets • This guide considers carbon emissions relating to agrifood processes within the direct control of the exporter: input → production → processing → packaging → transportation. The marketing and consumer/consumption stages are excluded since they are often beyond the control of SMEs exporters.
