Abstract: | Childhood overweight problems and obesity are global issues. Various studies have shown that the problem of childhood obesity is very high. Targeting obesity needs to be multifactorial, including targeting eating habits and supporting healthier choices through an enabling environment. Little information is available on the impact of vendors and shops in the vicinity of schools and the impact on the eating habits of primary school children. This study aimed to look at this relationship through two studies. An observational study was carried out to map the number of vendors and shops within a 200m radius of primary schools. A study was carried out with Year 3 and Year 6 children to take a look at their eating habits. The study showed a high predominance of vendors and shops selling unhealthy food with a higher concentration for state schools. 61.1% of children buy food from these shops and show a high parenteral influence. The results of this study further emphasise the importance of controlling the environment to support healthier-eating lifestyles for school children. |
