Abstract: The field of economic study on the occupational characteristics of artists is relatively young. Few studies on the topic investigate the differences between different types of artists, and there has been no research done on the earnings of Maltese artists. To that end, this dissertation investigates the labour market outcomes of Maltese artists and performing artists. Drawing on a survey sample of Maltese artists, the research identifies factors influencing their ability to earn an income and examines the differences between performing and other artists, using logit and generalised ordered logit models. The findings indicate that networking, general education, arts training and time spent on artistic practice were the factors that positively influenced Maltese artists’ earnings. Significant differences were identified between performing and non-performing artists. Performing artists tend to be younger, are more well-trained and better educated, possess stronger networks, and have higher artistic expenditure. Non-performing artists enjoy higher returns to training than performing artists, but they suffer a higher earnings penalty as they get older. Furthermore, the findings imply that the bulk of commercial arts-related work in Malta requires non-performing arts skills. This dissertation serves as a valuable first step in investigating the earnings of Maltese artists and performing artists, which can also serve as a basis for designing policy.
