We present the case of a 27-year old promiscuous homosexual man who died of AIDS in Malta after acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Australia. Over a period of 17 months we followed the progress of his disease from asymptomatic seropositivity to Kaposi's sarcoma and opportunistic infection with Candida albicans, Cytomegalovirus and an atypical Mycobacterium. Parallels between atypical Mycobacterial infection of the small intestine in AIDS patients, and Whipple's disease are highlighted.en_GB
