Abstract: The dynamic developments that dance has been through as an art form has effected audiences differently, according to their personal likes and dislikes. The aesthetic of dance, also differs according to personal taste or distaste. It is with this in mind, that the emerging ideas of the ugly and grotesque from the 1930s are discussed throughout this dissertation. By providing information on the Modern Period of dance, this dissertation aims to extend beyond the traditional canons of dance and introduce new ideas and understandings of dance aesthetic. Throughout the conduction of this research on the dancing body and its connection with audiences, the socio-cultural body has became a poignant and intriguing medium for analysing dance in relation to the ugly and grotesque.
