Issue Date: 2014
Abstract: This dissertation is a translation of some of the fundamental biological terms and their definitions taken from the Biology dictionary used in schools - Complete A-Z biology handbook by Bill Indge. The terms used in this dissertation were chosen by the help of Dr. Sandro Lanfranco. The aim of this dissertation is to increase the resources in the scientific and technical aspect in the Maltese language. The first part of the dissertation discusses scientific and technical translations. This also includes some theorists which talk about scientific and technical translations and also their theories and their views. In this part, there is also the discussion of cultural translation; how culture affects the translation. The translator has to adapt the translation according to the culture of the target language. It also discusses the problems in scientific translation. The second part of the dissertation presents the main translation of the terms and their definitions which are related to Biology. This part also includes some comments from the translator in the form of footnotes. In these footnotes, the translator analyses the translation and in the third part, these footnotes are summarised altogether. From this dissertation, one can see how the Maltese language can be interesting when it comes to the scientific language.
